Obama authorizes federal aid for local flood victims

La Grange residents and business owners who suffered property damage and other losses as a result of recent flooding can apply, beginning Friday, Aug. 20, for financial assistance from the federal government.

President Barack Obama today declared a major disaster exists in the State of Illinois following severe storms and floods that occurred during the period of July 22 to August 7.

The declaration affects residents and business owners in the counties of Cook, DuPage, Carroll, JoDaviess, Ogle, Stephenson and Winnebago.

Residents seeking assistance must contact the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster, according to a press release issued today by the White House.

Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide, the release said.

Applicants may register online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA(3362) or 1-800-462-7585 (TTY) for the hearing and speech impaired.

The toll-free telephone numbers will operate from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. CDT seven days a week until further notice.
