Say goodbye to the vines of ivy clinging to the facade of the La Grange Public Library. Once its autumn leaves have withered, plans are to cut the vines at the roots and pull the runners down, Bridget Bittman, the library's coordinator, said.

The matter was discussed by the library board at its September meeting, when Trustee Steve Wolf recommended the removal, citing the damage that could result as the ivy penetrates and loosens the mortar surrounding the bricks.
Next spring, the ivy's roots will be treated with a defoliant to prevent it from growing back.
